Structural Glass Research and Testing Facility (SGRT)

The Structural Glass Research and Testing Facility (SGRT) is the testing facility for structural performance of processed glass. Part of the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras, SGRT is a collaborative effort between the GSI and IIT Madras. Funded and supported by Glass Manufacturers and Federation of Safety Glass (FOSG), it is a one-of-its-kind testing facility for processed glass in India.

Types of glass

The types of glasses that are tested at SGRT, include

  • Heat Strengthened
  • Toughened / Tempered
  • Laminated
  • Insulated Glazing Unit (IGU)

Testing facilities at SGRT

The testing facilities that are currently available at SGRT are

  • Thickness test
  • Waviness test
  • Bend/Bow/Warpage test
  • Surface compression test
  • Fragmentation test
  • Ball drop test
  • Shot bag / Break test
  • Bake / High temp test
  • Boil / Moisture & Heat test
  • Pummel test
  • Radiation test
  • Humidity test (with / without condensation)
  • Moisture penetration index (MPI)
  • Gas leakage test
  • Dew point / frost point test
  • Dessicant / Delta test
  • Sealant quality test

GSI Product Performance Certification Programme 2.0 (GSI PPCP 2.0)

This programme confers the Third Party Certification of Processed Glass for Safety and Structural Performance based on the testing done at SGRT, IIT Madras. The structural performance properties of processed glass are tested and certified for safety and security parameters, load resistance, environmental impact, human impact and other external factors.
